Aberdeenshire Castle Trail - Haddo House and Tolquhon Castle

Still heading south, but also leaning a bit to the east, we arrived at Haddo House!  This is not a castle but a stately home!  Hard to tell the difference sometimes.  Haddo House is also owned by the National Trust so there was no question at to whether would could visit or not. The only problem was we were running out of time.

There were a few trees with these signs
marking special occasions

So we had a lovely walk around the premises and even treated ourselves to an ice cream.  This is also one I would like to return to and see the inside.
This is the tree planted by
George, Lord Haddo

Did you say ice cream?

Our next stop was Tolquhon Castle and we figured we would get there with at least a half hour to spare before they closed!

We arrived at Tolquhon Castle at least 45 minutes before the stated closing time on the website.  However, they were not open!  There was no one there, no lights on, nothing....So I took picture of my watch and the sign, but turns out, you can't see the watch face!

It did sound like an interesting castle though, the "height of fashion" - there you go with castles being fashionable.  I have learned so much on this trail! Another leaflet mentioned it was the most beautiful castle in Scotland.  I am thinking they meant in the day when all the walls were standing.  But no matter, we were not meant to see it close up.  This situation was ok for us, but there were cars that drove up after we did and they could have been visitors from foreign lands and this might have been their only chance to see this castle. And they were technically within the correct time.

So we will now head further south to our last destination - Dunnottar Castle. But that will probably require its own entry!
