End of Summer trip with our Grandson. Day 4

The boat not taken

Today didn’t turn out to be nearly as exciting as we had all hoped. We did get up with the alarm at 7:30am to be ready for the wildlife cruise - meeting at the harbour at 9am. We had not booked it though, but we did know only 4 others had so we knew it would be relatively safe to just arrive. The problem was, the island was socked in with fog.  And it did not look as if it were going to lift. We did get ready and headed down to the dock, but apparently, the weather had already spoken and the cruise was not going to happen anyway.

The ferry to Harris - not taken!
We then played with the idea of jumping on the ferry to Tarbert, Isle of Harris.  How cool would that be? For the day!!!  Only trouble was, it left at 2:30pm and wouldn't return that day.  This didn’t really fit our timetable.  So, we thought that Portree might be a better option and we just might catch a wildlife cruise there.

There has been an explosion of campers everywhere in Scotland.  It is mind boggling to see how many are just “here”.  And we are one of them…..  The size of our vehicle impairs our choices on occasion and when we got to Portree, this was a real problem. We simply could not park. There were already so many camper vans in the carpark that can handle them, there was no room for us. So we headed on to Sligachan.

Leaving Uig

Driving along Skye, we passed these two standing stones just on the side of the road!  They are called Sornaichean Coir' Fhinn, and are located on the shore of Loch Eyre.  They are clearly visible from the road, but it says it is difficult to park near them so it is a bit of a walk to get to them.  We just passed by and it was nice to see them so easily.

Sornaichean Coir' Fhinn

Sligachan is a campsite, hotel and restaurant that has caught our fancy before.  We have eaten there but never timed it right to actually stay overnight there.  We, again, intended to stay here one night and enjoy their fabulous restaurant, well stocked bar and the super playground.  (the playground is not usually a factor in our travels but we have a 9 year old with us just now!)  We arrived here at lunchtime though so too early to stop for the day….Corbyn was ok with that and he really did’t want to play in the playground either.  We got a nice lunch though, Corbyn and I got fish and chips, Alan got a burger.  And once again, no opportunity to partake of their fabulous bar!

We have decided, without telling Corbyn, that we will head off to the Highland Wildlife Park for our last day together.  Then he (and I) can see Hamish the baby Polar Bear!  Hamish is the first Polar Bear born in the UK for 25 years! He was born in December, 2017 and I really wanted Corbyn to see him while he was still relatively small.  Alan won't be able to see any of the park since he has very kindly offered to drop us off as near the park as possible and stay with Kenzie. This park is so strict, dogs are not even allowed in the parking lot!

Eilean Donan Castle

So, with that decision, came the easy part, leaving Skye!  After lunch, we headed down to Eilean Donan Castle, once again. And it was open, once again!  Neither time did I get to go in though.  Maybe next time!  According to the unwritten law of how Alan and I travel, we felt it was too early to stop though. That is until the wise words of Corbyn said, why not?  So here we are  on the shores of Loch Duich, with the illuminated and gorgeous Eilean Donan Castle shining right outside our camper window. Does it get better than that?

Oh, we did walk to the castle once we arrived at our campsite.  On the way across the bridge, suddenly police were flying by - not a sight normally seen in the quiet Highlands!  Traffic stopped and more wind turbines came past!  This time, we were on the bridge and if they looked large before, they felt gigantic when they are less than two feet away, if that!

Dornie Village

I loved the walk, only about a mile and over the bridge, down to the castle and then into Dornie Village.  I have always thought this village looked darling, but never had the chance to actually see it.

A pint of blackcurrant....what was I thinking?
He did manage to burn off all that sugar
on the walk back to the campsite though!

We even stopped at The Clachan pub for a drink before heading back to camp!
