End of Summer trip with our grandson. Day 2

Eileen Donan Castle
The next morning, we headed to Skye via Kyle of Lochalsh to buy food at the Co-op.  We now have two dinners’ worth of food ready so we don’t have to worry so much about eating so late again.

Eileen Donan Castle
On the way, we passed Eileen Donan Castle, actually open, but there was no time for me to go in.  Maybe the next time we pass I will be able to. It has been almost 30 years since I have been in this castle and I would like to see it again one day!

There was a 10K race heading over Skye bridge to Kyle of Lochalsh but they didn’t affect our drive at all. Looked like a woman was way in first place, girl power!!!

Bridge ends at Kyleakin and we headed on to Broadford. And surprised by the diesel price! So we stopped there for diesel, at another Co-op!  We will have to remember this place for a number of reasons!  (I am home now and just catching up on this trip so I can say we only saw Co-ops and were really pleased with their selection and prices.)

Portree

We then headed straight to Portree to visit the harbour and also Tourist Information.  The last time we were here, we went on a Sea Eagle Cruise and we are considering doing that again, but maybe later in the week.  Portree was lovely, as usual, but there was a cruise ship in so the town was a bit crowded.  My main purchase was a large skein of Aran yarn, 20% wool. This was because I had just finished my first ever, tiny, test crocheted hat and Corbyn liked it so much, he asked me to make him one. This first one was the wrong sort of yarn and was baby size, but I was chuffed that he asked. So, when I saw a shop selling just what I wanted, I got him to come in and pick his colour…..red!   Wish me luck on this.  I usually crochet on road trips, but not something by special request.

Resting Piper at Kilt Rock

After getting all the island info, we headed up north, with no idea where to stop!  Only this time, it was not going to be so late as the day before.  We headed north out of Portree, missed the campsite we thought we would use, Torvaig, and just continued to head north.  On the way, we saw the Old Man of Storr and Kilt Rock.
Kilt Rock

Stopped at the Staffin Campsite for the night. This is another rather basic campsite, in fact, it does not even take cards.  This is mainly due to the signals being so undependable on Skye that some folks just don’t bother. We managed to scrape enough funds together to pay for the night but the warden reminded us that, on Skye, almost everything will be closed the next day, which was Sunday! So he kindly suggested we make a mad dash to the village of Staffin and the one little shop there that has a cash machine. The reason for the mad dash? It was 5:30 and this shop closes at 6!

Mission accomplished!  Camper van parked and settled for the night.  This campsite even has a microwave in the little kitchen set up for campers AND and nice laundry room - washer and dryer!  Might be basic but it does seem to have all o life’s necessities!
